LINZ/STARNBERG, October 21, 2021
With some of the world’s best tennis players set to converge on Linz for the 31st Upper Austria Ladies Linz, the qualifying competition promises some high-quality match-ups. On Thursday, the organizers of the WTA 250 tournament released the entry list, who will be going head-to-head in the preliminary event at the TipsArena from November 6 to 7.
The qualifying field is led by World No. 68 Anastasia Potapova. The 20-year-old Russian is a former junior No. 1, as well as the 2016 Wimbledon Championships girls’ singles champion, having defeated Dayana Yastremska from the Ukraine in the final.
Elena-Gabriela Ruse will also be part of the line-up. The 23-year-old Romanian captured her first title on the WTA Tour this season, winning the Hamburg European Open in July as a qualifier. Ruse fought her way through to the final, in which she beat home favourite Andrea Petkovic in straight sets.
Aliaksandra Sasnovich will try to continue her good run of form in Upper Austria after reaching the fourth round in Indian Wells. In the Californian desert, the 27-year-old from Belarus knocked out reigning US Open champion Emma Raducanu, who is expected to make her Linz debut next month.
Former World No. 2 Vera Zvonareva will also battle for one of the spots in the main draw. The 37-year-old has won 12 WTA Tour singles titles and reached the finals of the 2008 WTA Tour Finals, 2010 Wimbledon Championships, and 2010 US Open. Zvonareva also was a bronze medalist at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In doubles, she has won five Grand Slam titles.
Main draw action at the Upper Austria Ladies Linz is kicking off Monday, November 8. For tickets, please visit the tournament’s official website.
