The top two favourites of the Campeonato Internacional de Tenis fell in Tuesday’s opening round of the $52,080 ATP Challenger Tour clay-court tournament, hosted by the Sociedade Hípica de Campinas in Brazil.
Nicolas Jarry of Chile knocked out No. 1 seed Federico Coria from Argentina 6-2, 6-3. The World No. 166 from Santiago struck six aces and won 74 per cent of his first-service points to advance after one hour and 18 minutes.
“I had a lot of time to think, I’m more motivated than ever and I feel like I’m playing really well,” said former Top 40 Jarry, who was suspended from competition for 11 months last year due to an anti-doping violation. “The first match of a tournament is always difficult, especially against Federico. I’m very happy, I think the key was to keep the rhythm right from the beginning. I started solid, doing what I had to do, served well and kept mentally strong.”
Jarry will next take on Argentine Camilo Ugo Carabelli.
In the bottom half of the draw, Argentine qualifier Santiago Fa Rodriguez Taverna upset No. 2 seed Jaume Munar 6-4, 6-3. The World No. 336 from Buenos Aires saved all three break points he faced and capitalized on three of his own 10 break-point chances to prevail after one hour and 53 minutes.
Rodriguez Taverna will next challenge Peruvian qualifier Nicolas Alvarez, who rallied past Pedro Cachin of Argentina 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 after two hours and 31 minutes.
Monteiro, Heide into second round
Meanwhile, the local favourites recorded a good start into tournament. No. 4 seed Thiago Monteiro opened his title bid with a comfortable 6-2, 6-1 victory over Swiss qualifier Johan Nikles 6-2, 6-1. The 27-year-old lefty from Fortaleza won 62 per cent of the total points played to succeed after one hour and eight minutes. Monteiro will next face Juan Pablo Varillas from Peru.
Promising Brazilian teenager Gustavo Heide booked his spot in the second round with an impressive 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 win over last week’s last finalist at the Uruguay Open Juan Ignacio Londero from Argentina. The 19-year-old Sao Paulo native, who captured his third career title on the ITF World Tennis Tour in Brasilia two weeks ago, fired 14 aces and broke his opponent’s serve three times to secure victory in two hours and 24 minutes.
“I knew about his good results and had nothing to lose, that’s what I talked to my coach,” said Heide after the match. “I knew it was going to be a very strong tournament here, so I entered as relaxed as possible, doing what I love to do, which is playing tennis. I kept the focus, what I had been training and it worked out”.
World No. 596 Heide will next play No. 3 seed Juan Manuel Cerundolo of Argentina, who outlasted Brazilian alternate Matheus Pucinelli de Almeida 6-4, 5-7, 6-1. The encounter lasted two hours and 10 minutes.
