CAMPINAS/STARNBERG, November 18, 2021

Home favourite Thiago Monteiro booked his spot in the quarterfinals of the Campeonato Internacional de Tenis in Campinas, Brazil on Wednesday. The No. 4 seed of the $52,080 ATP Challenger clay-court tournament benefited from the retirement of Juan Pablo Varillas of Peru.

Monteiro was only 37 minutes on the court, leading 5-1, when Varillas was forced to stop playing due to a ribs injury.

“I felt really good on the court, with the whole atmosphere, the people supporting me. Unfortunately Varillas had to withdraw, which is atypical. I don’t even remember the last time I won by withdrawal. I’m worried about Juan Pablo, we’re friends and we’ve been training together for a long time in Argentina,” said Monteiro.
The World No. 94 from Fortaleza will next take on Timofey Skatov of Kazakhstan, who edged past Argentine Andrea Collarini 7-6(2), 6-2 in almost two hours of play.
Also in the top half of the draw, Nicolas Jarry backed up his first-round win over top seed Federico Coria with a solid 6-1, 6-2 victory against Camilo Ugo Carabelli from Argentina. The 26-year-old from Chile struck nine aces and won 88 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after 61 minutes.
Jarry will next play Tomas Etcheverry of Argentina, who rallied from a set down to overcome German Nicola Kuhn 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. The encounter lasted two hours and 40 minutes.
