ORLANDO, December 8, 2021 (USTA Press Release)

Top juniors Alexander Visser (17; Westport, Conn.) and Daria Smetannikov (17; Morganville, N.J.) each won singles titles at last week’s USTA Boys’ and Girls’ 18s National Indoor Championships.

The USTA National Indoor Championships, one of five junior USTA National Championship events in 2021 that make up the USTA adidas Junior Championship Series, were held last week at eight locations across the country with singles and doubles competition across the 18s, 16s, 14s and 12s age groups.

Visser, a high school junior and one of the top-ranked 18-and-under players in the country, was the tournament’s top seed. He cruised to a straight-sets victory over No. 9 seed Dean Kamenev (Hinsdale, Ill.) in the final, 6-4, 6-4. In the doubles final, Cooper Woestendick (Olathe, Kan.) and Nikita Filin (Wilmette, Ill.) defeated Alexander Aney (New York) and Jason Shuler (Scarsdale, N.Y.).

Smetannikov, a high school senior who is committed to play college tennis at Texas A&M, needed three sets to overcome Gayathri Krishnan (San Jose, Calif.) in the singles final, by a score of 5-7, 7-6(2), 6-1. She also reached the doubles final, where she and partner Shannon Lam (East Brunswick, N.J.) fell to the second-seeded pair of Stephanie Yakoff (Fort Lee, N.J.) and Kaitlyn Carnicella (Whippany, N.J.).

Stephan Gershfeld (Hewlett, N.Y.) won the boys’ 16s singles title, defeating Ian Bracks (Tulsa, Okla.) in straight sets, while the girls’ 16s singles title went to tenth-seeded Erin Ha (Tenafly, N.J.), who knocked off No. 1 seed Amber Yin (Ballwin, Mo.).

Top-seeded Nicholas Patrick (Coal Valley, Ill.) took home the boys’ 14s singles title, defeating No. 2 seed Ronit Karki (East Brunswick, N.J.) in the final. Kenna Erickson (Katy, Texas) won the girls’ 14s singles title, knocking off fourth-seeded Leena Friedman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) in three sets.

Colin McPeek (Carmel, Ind.) was the only player to sweep titles as he won boys’ 12s singles and doubles titles, while Sophie Suh (Orange, Calif.) won the girls’ 12s singles title.

Finals results from the USTA National Indoor Championships can be found on page 2. The complete draws are available here.

Each year, more than 120,000 players compete in USTA junior tournaments. Players compete in levels of competition through earned advancement in the 10s, 12s, 14s, 16s and 18s age divisions. USTA junior tournaments help kids take their game as far as they want – high school, college or the pros – or just have fun competing.
