Following his maiden triumph on the ATP Challenger Tour in Antalya, Turkey last week, Portuguese Nuno Borges continued his fine run of form by reaching the semi-finals of the Maia Open on home soil.
The No. 5 seed of the €44,820 clay-court tournament knocked off second-seeded Belgian Kimmer Coppejans 6-4, 7-6(4) on Friday.

Borges hit five aces and won 73 per cent of his first-service points to seal victory in one hour and 36 minutes. “It was my best match since the start of the tournament and I’m very satisfied because I feel I’ve been getting better. I knew today was going to be very difficult, so I’m very proud of the way I handled the situation and managed to resolve the issues. Today I felt very solid on the court and I did well in the decisive moments,” Borges said.
Up next for the World No. 228 will be Frenchman Geoffrey Blancaneaux, who received a walkover from No. 3 seed Gastao Elias. The Portuguese was forced to withdraw due to a right shoulder injury.
The top half of the draw is led by No. 1 seed Andrej Martin. The World No. 120 from Slovakia fought past Louis Wessels from Germany 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Martin converted four of his nine break-point chances to prevail after two hours and 20 minutes.
Martin will next take on Chun-Hsin Tseng of Chinese Taipei. The sixth favourite beat Calvin Hemery of France 6-4, 6-1. The encounter lasted one hour and 23 minutes.
