Former junior World No. 1 Chun-hsin Tseng of Chinese Taipei captured his maiden title on the ATP Challenger Tour. The No. 7 seed of the €44,820 Maia Open 2, hosted by the Complexo Municipal de Ténis da Maia, overcame local hero and fifth seed Nuno Borges 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 in Sunday’s singles final.

Twenty-year-old Tseng, a four-time winner on the ITF Pro Circuit, withstood four aces and broke his rival’s serve five times to secure victory in two hours and 23 minutes.

“I played my best match of these two weeks and I’m very happy,” said Tseng after recording his ninth win during the fortnight in Northern Portugal.

“The first set was tough and I was mentally a bit down, but when switching sides between sets I told myself to calm down, keep fighting and that sooner or later I would have new opportunities and it happened. I’m very happy, the first title is always special and I will always remember these two weeks in Maia.”

Regarded as one of the best juniors of the last decade by many tennis fans and experts due to a 2018 season that saw him competing in three Grand-Slam finals, lifting two trophies at Roland-Garros and Wimbledon, Tseng has now won his biggest title at senior’s level.

Born in Taipei, “Jason”, as he likes to be called, had already reached two finals on the ATP Challenger Tour: the first in Prague in July 2019, and the second in Maia last week, which he lost to Geoffrey Blancaneaux. Tseng pocketed €6,190 in prize money as well as 80 ATP Ranking points and will crack the Top 200 for the first time.
