Kaichi Uchida of Japan captured his first title on the ATP Challenger Tour by winning the Rio de Janeiro Tennis Classic, the final tournament of the 2021 season hosted by the Parque Olimpico do Rio de Janeiro.
The No. 8 seed of the $52,080 hard-court event overcame Nicolas Alvarez Varona from Spain, who was also looking for his maiden Challenger crown, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(3) in Sunday’s singles final.
Uchida, a winner of eight trophies on the ITF Pro Circuit, fired 10 aces, won 75 per cent of his first-service points and secured victory in two hours and 19 minutes.

“I’m very happy for the week and for the title. It was a tough match, as Nicolas also fought until the end,” said Uchida.
The World No. 379 became Japan’s first Challenger champion of 2021. Uchida pocketed $7,200 in prize money as well as 80 ATP Ranking points.
The Rio de Janeiro Tennis Classic was the first tennis tournament held at the Parque Olímpico da Barra after the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
