GRAN CANARIA/STARNBERG, January 22, 2022
The ATP Challenger Tour will return to Gran Canaria next month. This was announced by MEF Tennis Events, Italian organizers of the €45,730 clay-court event on Saturday. The third edition of the Gran Canaria Challenger is scheduled for February 28 to March 6 and will be hosted by the Tennis Academy El Cortijo Club De Campo, one of the most renowned tennis facilities on the third largest island of the Canary Islands.
Last year, back-to-back tournaments took place at the same venue, which is located approximately 15 kilometers south of the capital Las Palmas in Telde, the second largest city in Gran Canaria. The international airport can be reached by car in just 10 minutes. In 2021, the stars of the Challenger circuit stayed at the Bull Reina Isabel & Spa Hotel, overlooking the well-known Playa de Las Canteras in Las Palmas.
The first edition was won by Frenchman Enzo Couacaud, who beat Canadian veteran Steven Diez in the final. The second week concluded with the title win of Carlos Gimeno Valero. The Spaniard lifted his maiden Challenger trophy following a straight-sets victory over Kimmer Coppejans from Belgium in the championship match.

“We experienced magical emotions in 2020 and 2021 thanks to unexpected tournaments and also some luck,” said Marcello Marchesini, president of MEF Tennis Events. “We are very motivated to start this new season. Organizing an international tournament means working for months, that’s why we are already giving everything for our first dates in 2022. We want to experience incredible emotions again.”
The Gran Canaria Challenger will be the first of a record-breaking number of 12 ATP Challenger Tour tournaments to be held on Spanish soil this season.
