JÖNKÖPING, March 12, 2016
Karen Khachanov and Andrey Golubev will compete in Sunday’s final of the €42,500 RC Hotel Open in Jönköping.
The 19-year-old Russian, who is part of ATP’s current “Next-Gen-Campaign”, knocked out third seed Jan-Lennard Struff 1-6, 7-6, 7-6. Khachanov withstood 21 aces, hitting 12 of his own to prevail in one hour and 53 minutes.
The teenager from Moscow will vie for his second ATP Challenger title, facing Andrey Golubev for the first time on the tour. The 28-year-old Kazakh ended the winning streak of Dutch qualifier Matwe Middelkoop, securing a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Golubev didn’t face a break point, converting four of his own to end the encounter after only 54 minutes. It is the second final of the season for the world number 208, who finished runner-up in Launceston last month. Khachanov beat Sergiy Stakhovsky in Istanbul last September to capture his maiden title.
