Mika Brunold and Aysegul Mert are the champions of the Dunlop Bavarian Junior Winter Championships hosted by the TennisBase Oberhaching, situated in the South of Munich, Germany. The tournament is categorized J2 as part of the ITF World Tennis Juniors Tour.
The boys’ singles competition was dominated by Brunold from Switzerland, who didn’t drop a set during the tournament. The 17-year-old, whose parents were top national players in Switzerland, was born near Basel and his father Armando practiced with Roger Federer at the Ecublens Training Centre. In the championship match, the current World No. 62 in the ITF Juniors ranking met Czech No. 5 seed Vojtech Petr, who also didn’t lose a set en route to the final. No. 6 seed Brunold prevailed 6-3, 6-3 after 75 minutes. The player of the national Elite Sport Centre from Swiss Tennis in Biel lifted his fourth career trophy on the ITF Juniors circuit.
Playing her first tournament following her participation at the Australian Open, Mert clinched the title of the girls’ singles competition. The 17-year-old from Turkey defeated Russian No. 5 seed Anna Zyryanova in the title match 6-0, 6-2 in exact one hour of play. The No. 3 seed celebrated her eighth singles title on the ITF Juniors Tour.
The Dunlop Bavarian Junior Winter Championships marked the start of back-to-back ITF tournaments held at the TennisBase Oberhaching. Next week’s Daikin Open will be part of the men’s ITF World Tennis Tour.
