Five Frenchmen booked their spots in the quarterfinals of the Teréga Open Pau-Pyrénées on Thursday. They will join their compatriot Gregoire Barrere in the stage of the final eight of the €90,280 ATP Challenger 100 hard-court tournament.
In a duel between two veterans on the Circuit, 37-year-old Gilles Simon defeated 34-year-old Ruben Bemelmans of Belgium 7-6(3), 7-5. The No. 6 seed won 53 per cent of the total points played and converted his fifth match point after two hours and eight minutes.
Simon will next take on fellow Frenchman Manuel Guinard, who battled past Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3 in the longest match of the day after two hours and 26 minutes.
Quentin Halys only needed 58 minutes to beat Nino Serdarusic of Croatia. The No. 7 seed from France capitalized on both of his two break-point chances to secure a 6-4, 6-4 victory. Up next for Halys will be Barrere.
In other action, Antoine Escoffier edged out Moldovan lucky loser and defending champion Radu Albot 7-6(5), 7-6(2). The 29-year-old qualifier from France struck nine aces and won 76 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after one hour and 45 minutes. Escoffier will next play No. 8 seed Vasek Pospisil, who defeated French teenager Arthur Fils 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 22 minutes. Constant Lestienne knocked off 2020 Pau winner Ernests Gulbis of Latvia 6-3, 6-2 to set a quarterfinal clash with Roman Safiullin of Russia. The encounter lasted one hour and 16 minutes.
