British young gun Jack Draper remains the man to beat in Forli. The 20-year-old Englishman claimed his third trophy in Emilia-Romagna, Northern Italy by winning the Città di Forli 5.
Draper defeated US-American qualifier Alexander Ritschard 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(8) in Sunday’s singles final of the €45,730 ATP Challenger indoor hard-court tournament. The World No. 162 sent down 10 aces and won 74 per cent of his first-service points. Draper came back from 0-5 down in the tie-break of the deciding set and saved four match points to prevail after two hours and 19 minutes.
The Sutton native battled his way to the championship match through the bottom half of the draw with wins over Jesper de Jong from the Netherlands, Italian qualifier Gianmarco Ferrari, US-American qualifier Michael Mmoh and Mirza Basic of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In-form Draper has improved his win-loss record to 17-2 this season, including 15-1 in Forli. He pocketed €6,190 in prize money and earned 80 ATP Ranking points, moving up into the Top 150 on Monday.
Bortolotti/Sachko earn doubles title
On Saturday, Marco Bortolotti of Italy and Ukrainian Vitaliy Sachko captured the doubles title. The No. 4 seeds fought past fifth favourites Victor Vlad Cornea of Romania and Fabian Fallert from Germany 7-6(5), 3-6, 10-5. The encounter lasted one hour and 41 minutes.
“This triumph of mine is for my beloved Ukraine, a land of peace. My compatriots are suffering from the attack by the Russians. We are and will always be a free people,” Sachko stated afterwards.
By winning their first team title, Bortolotti and Sachko split €2,670 in prize money and pocketed 80 ATP Doubles Ranking points.
