MUNICH, March 1, 2022
For the first time in the tournament’s history, two Top 10 players will compete in the BMW Open by American Express as World No. 8 Casper Ruud has joined World No. 3 and home favourite Alexander Zverev in the line-up of the ATP 250 clay-court event. The 106th edition of the International Bavarian Championships are scheduled for April 22 to May 1, 2022 in Munich.
The 23-year-old Norwegian swept titles on the dirt at Bastad, Gstaad and Kitzbühel in July 2021 to become first player to win three trophies in as many weeks since Andy Murray at 2011 Bangkok, Tokyo and Shanghai. Ruud earned personal-best 57 wins and five titles last year to end the season at a career-high ranking.
Munich is also familiar territory for Ruud. The former Junior World No. 1 received a wild card as a teenager in 2017 and 2018 and reached the semi-finals of the BMW Open in 2021.
“Casper is currently one of the best up-and-coming players on the tour and personally I am very pleased that we were able to continue signing him for the BMW Open by American Express. He perfectly reflects our philosophy of young, ambitious players, whom we want to give an optimal environment in Munich in the long term,” said tournament director Patrik Kühnen.
