Regione Abruzzo ATP Challenger in Roseto

The quarterfinals of the inaugural Regione Abruzzo Aterno Gas & Power Cup I, hosted by the Tennis Club Roseto in Roseto Degli Abruzzi, are set. Nikolas Sanchez Izquierdo emerged victorious from the all-Spanish second-round clash with No. 3 seed Bernabe Zapata Miralles, winning 7-5, 0-6, 6-3 on Thursday afternoon.

The 22-year-old qualifier from Barcelona broke serve six times, won four points less than Zapata Miralles but secured victory in one hour and 54 minutes. World No. 300 Sanchez Izquierdo will next take on Czech veteran Lukas Rosol. The 36-year-old Brno native defeated Alessandro Giannessi of Italy 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 25 minutes.

In other action, Flavio Cobolli delighted his home crowd by edging out French qualifier Alexis Gautier 6-1, 7-5. The No. 7 seed won 86 per cent of his first-service points and 59 per cent of the total points played to advance after one hour and 12 minutes. Cobolli will next face Timofey Skatov from Kazakhstan, who beat Joao Domingues of Portugal 7-6(5), 6-2. The encounter lasted one hour and 56 minutes.

The quarterfinal’s line-up will be led by top seed Carlos Taberner, who will oppose fellow Spaniard Carlos Gimeno Valero. Portuguese Nuno Borges and Italian Andrea Arnaboldi round out the final eight in the singles draw of the €45,730 ATP Challenger 80 clay-court tournament.
