SAVANNAH/STARNBERG, May 1, 2022
World No. 139 Jack Sock and 307th-ranked Christian Harrison are set to face off in the championship match of the 2022 Savannah Challenger.
In the first match on semi-finals Saturday with an all-US-Americans line-up, 2016 champion Bjorn Fratangelo kicked off action against 2014 finalist Sock. Sock grabbed the opening set 6-2 with ease, but in the second set Fratangelo was able to stay alive, leveling the match at 4-4. It would ultimately be the No. 4 seed who would advance 6-2, 6-4 after one hour and 26 minutes.
The second match of the day on the Landings Stadium Court was 2018 finalist Harrison taking on former Ohio State star and No. 6 seed JJ Wolf. Harrison took control early in the match and won the first set 6-1. It was much of the same story in the second set with Harrison proving unstoppable and clinching the match 6-1, 6-3 in 69 minutes.
The 27-year-old Louisiana native is seeking his first singles title on the ATP Challenger Tour. Sock could lift his fourth Challenger career trophy, his first of the season. The pair’s head-to-head record is tied at 1-1.
Gonzales/Huey triumph in doubles
The final match of the day was the doubles championship where No. 4 seeds Ruben Gonzales and Treat Huey from the Philippines took on Tun-Lin Wu of Chinese Taipei and Zhizhen Zhang from China. Gonzales and Huey were barely able to sneak by Wu and Zhang in the first set, beating the team 7-6(3). Wu and Zhang put up a good fight in the second set, but in the end, Gonzales and Huey edged them out 6-4 to secure the doubles title in one hour and 22 minutes.
By winning their first team title, Gonzales and Huey split $3,100 in prize money and earned 80 ATP Doubles Ranking points.
