This Week On The ATP Tour – CW18

The Complex of the “Magic Box” is home to the Madrid Open since 2009

STARNBERG, May 1, 2022

The second clay-court ATP Masters 1000 event of the season will see the world’s best players try to create magic at the Caja Magica. Spaniards Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz lead the way on home soil at the Mutua Madrid Open alongside World No. 1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia and Monte Carlo titlist Stefanos Tsitsipas from Greece.

After a first-round bye, top seed Djokovic will open his title bid against the winner of the match between local wild card entry Carlos Gimeno Valero and Frenchman Gael Monfils.

Spaniards have won the title six times since the inaugural edition in 2002, with Nadal lifting the trophy for a fifth time in 2017. The No. 3 seed from Mallorca will take on the winner of the encounter between Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic and Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan.

Alexander Zverev is the defending champion. The 25-year-old German, who fell in his opening match in Munich this week to Holger Rune, is the second seed in the Spanish capital and awaits either Marin Cilic of Croatia or Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the second round.
