Local wild card entry Matteo Gigante has booked his spot in the quarterfinals of the Internazionali di Tennis Città di Vicenza. The 20-year-old lefty from Italy knocked off No. 5 seed Renzo Olivo of Argentina 6-3, 7-6(5) on Thursday.
Gigante, who captured his maiden title on the ITF World Tennis Tour in Sharm El-Sheikh in March, capitalized on all of his six break-point opportunities to secure victory in one hour and 54 minutes. The World No. 504 will next take on his compatriot Andrea Arnaboldi, who beat fellow Italian Francesco Maestrelli 6-3, 6-2 after one hour and 14 minutes.
A total of five Italians, including top seed Gianluca Mager, advanced to the stage of the final eight of the €45,730 ATP Challenger Tour clay-court event. The quintet will be joined one Brazilian, as Daniel Dutra da Silva fought past Ukrainian qualifier Oleg Prihodko 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 in one hour and 47 minutes, as well as Argentines Andrea Collarini and No. 2 seed Juan Manuel Cerundolo.
