USTA Press Release, May 29, 2022
Florida sophomore Ben Shelton (Gainesville, Fla.) and Texas sophomore Peyton Stearns (Mason, Ohio) won the men’s and women’s singles national titles at the 2022 NCAA DI Tennis Championships on Saturday, marking the second consecutive year that Americans have swept the top collegiate singles titles.
Shelton, the son of Florida men’s tennis coach Bryan Shelton, defeated San Diego’s August Holmgren, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, to earn back-to-back men’s singles titles for the Gators. Shelton’s teammate, senior Sam Riffice (Orlando, Fla.), won the title last year and reached the last four of this year’s event, falling to Holmgren in the semifinals.
