FORLI/STARNBERG, May 30, 2022

Main draw action at the €134,920 Forli Open kicked off in style on Monday with Italian youngster Giulio Zeppieri booking his spot in the second round of the ATP Challenger Tour clay-court event. The 20-year-old Rome native knocked out No. 4 seed Hugo Dellien of Bolivia 7-6(5), 6-3.

In the final match of the day and under the lights on Center Court of the Cooperativa Tennis Villa Carpena, Zeppieri converted both of his two break points and won 55 per cent of the total points played to secure victory in one hour and 45 minutes. The World No. 216 will next take on a qualifier, as French teenager Arthur Fils opposes Francesco Passaro of Italy.

Taro Daniel edged past Federico Gaio of Italy 7-6(5), 6-3. The fifth seed from Japan capitalized on all of his four break-point chances to advance after one hour and 41 minutes. Up next for Daniel will be either Italian teenager Luca Nardi or French qualifier Matteo Martineau.

Earlier in the day, Riccardo Bonadio became the first Italian to secure his spot in the second round. The 28-year-old alternate defeated Frenchman Geoffrey Blancaneaux 6-3, 6-1 in one hour and 17 minutes. Bonadio will next take on the winner of the encounter between No. 8 seed Marco Cecchinato of Italy and Argentine Andrea Collarini, who finished runner-up to Andrea Pellegrino at last week’s Vicenza Challenger.

In other action, Gastao Elias from Portugal rallied past Croatian wild card entry Borna Coric, who returned to the circuit in March after being sidelined from the courts for one year with a shoulder injury, 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-3 after almost three hours of play. Elias awaits either No. 2 seed Jaume Munar from Spain or home favourite Alessandro Giannessi in the second round.

Maximilian Marterer set a possible second-round clash with World No. 66 and top seed Lorenzo Musetti. The 26-year-old lefty from Germany beat Constant Lestienne of France 6-3, 7-5 in one hour and 27 minutes. Musetti will open his title bid on Tuesday against Timofey Skatov of Kazakhstan.
