HAMBURG, May 31, 2022 (Press Release)
Another top player confirmed her participation at the 2022 Hamburg European Open: French Open quarterfinalist Daria Kasatkina is heading to Hamburg! The former world No. 10, who faces Veronika Kudermetova at Stade Roland Garros this Wednesday, shared the following remarks from Paris: “I have heard great things from other players about last year’s edition of the WTA tournament in Hamburg and I am aware of the amazing history of this place dating back to the 19th century. Many legends have lifted the trophy here. I am really looking forward to come to the cool city of Hamburg, I will try to explore it if I have any time off.”
Alongside the 25-year-old Kasatkina, World No. 9 Danielle Collins from the United Stattes, tournament ambassador Andrea Petkovic of Germany and last year’s winner Elena-Gabriela Ruse from Romania have already announced their participation in the women’s event at the Hamburg European Open scheduled for July 16-24. Kasatkina is currently ranked 20th in the world. She achieved her career-high ranking of No. 10 in 2018, when she reached the quarterfinals at the French Open and Wimbledon. Now, she’s in the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the third time! On Monday, Kasatkina needed only 80 minutes for a comfortable 6-2, 6-2 victory over Italian Camila Giorgi in the round of 16 in Paris. So far, she has not dropped a single set at the 2022 French Open, conceding only 14 games to her opponents. The 2014 French Open junior champion, who recently delivered a convincing performance with her semi-final appearance at the Masters tournament in Rome, has been back among the world’s elite since a lackluster 2019 and 2020. She captured two of her four WTA titles in 2021 (at the WTA 250 tournament in Melbourne and the WTA 500 event in St. Petersburg), and she also reached two more finals. The counter-puncher, known for her jumping backhand, drop shots, and through-the-legs trick shots, has a match record this year of 22-10. “I saw Daria back in 2016 at our tournaments in Nuremberg and Linz. She was already a huge talent and very outgoing and likeable. I’m really excited about her dream run in Paris! Hamburg’s fans can look forward to a player with a great personality and a very compelling, dynamic style of play,” said tournament director Sandra Reichel. Advance ticket sales have already started for Germany’s largest and most prestigious tennis tournament. Tickets for the clay-court classic at Rothenbaum are available via the online ticket store on the tournament homepage. Hamburg European Open will also offer a variety of travel packages in cooperation with the official players’ hotel Grand Elysée and Hamburg Tourism. For the men’s competition at the 2022 Hamburg European Open, two-time Hamburg winner Nikoloz Basilashvili, Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Danish rising star Holger Rune have already made early commitments. The 19-year-old Rune is also currently making a sensational quarterfinal appearance at the French Open after defeating world No. 4 Stefanos Tsitsipas from Greece in the round of 16.
