Matteo Berrettini clinched the title of the BOSS Open in Stuttgart. The No. 2 seed of the ATP 250 grass-court event in Southwest Germany fought past two time-Wimbledon champion Andy Murray 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 in Sunday’s singles final.
In front of packed stands and under blue sky at the Tennis Club Weissenhof, Berrettini fired 19 aces and won 81 per cent of his first-service points to secure victory in two hours and 40 minutes.

It has been a fantastic comeback week for the 26-year-old Italian, who missed the clay season after undergoing a minor operation on his right hand in late March. Berrettini, champion in Stuttgart three years ago, has improved to 28-6 on grass.
“It is unbelievable. It was obviously a goal [to win the title], but I thought it would be really, really tough,” Berrettini said. “I don’t even think I played my best tennis, but that is why I am even more proud of myself. Mentally I was really tough. I did an unbelievable job to be there. I fought hard and this means a lot.”
The World No. 10 earned €105,290 in prize money as well as 250 ATP Ranking points.
Murray back in a final
Murray had the chance to claim his first ATP Tour title since 2019 back in January, only to suffer a straight-sets defeat to Aslan Karatsev in the final of the Sydney Tennis Classic.
“It’s been a incredible week here. I really enjoyed it. I’d like to congratulate Matteo and his team on a fantastic week,” said Murray in his on-court interview. “He’s just come back from a surgery and it’s never easy. He played extremely well today and deserved the win. Finally, thank you to my team here and my team back home.”
The 35-year-old Briton required treatment from the physio on two occasions in the third set.
“Sorry I couldn’t get over the line today, but there’s been a lot of progress the last few weeks. I’m looking forward to what the future has to hold, I’m feeling a lot better about my game. Hopefully my body can hold up a little while longer so I can keep playing matches like this.”

Hurkacz/Pavic triumph in doubles
Earlier in the day, Hubert Hurkacz of Poland and Croatia’s Mate Pavic ended their debut week as a team in style by winning the doubles title. The No. 3 seeds defeated top seeds Tim Puetz of Germany and Michael Venus from New Zealand 7-6(3), 7-6(5) in one hour and 27 minutes.
Hurkacz and Pavic split €36,580 in prize money and earned 250 ATP Doubles Ranking points.
