For the first time since 2015 the ATP Challenger Tour has returned to Corrientes, the capital city of the province of Corrientes, Argentina, located on the eastern shore of the Paraná River, about 1,000 km from Buenos Aires. It has a population of about 350,000.
The Dove Men+Care Challenger Corrientes is being held at the CTC Corrientes Tennis Club and offers a total prize money of $37,520. Main draw action of the clay-court event kicked off on Monday with one seeded player reaching the second round. Nick Hardt from the Dominican Republic defeated Argentine alternate Fermin Tenti 6-2, 7-5 in one hour and 38 minutes. The fifth favourite will next play 20-year-old Brazilian Gustavo Heide, who beat Jorge Panta of Peru 6-3, 6-4.
No. 4 seed Gonzalo Villanueva of Argentina lost 7-5, 6-4 to his compatriot Mariano Navone. The latter will take on home favourite Ignacio Monzon in the second round. Local wild card entry Alex Barrena delighted his home crowd by knocking out No. 8 seed Nicolas Alvarez of Peru. The 19-year-old World No. 680 from Buenos Aires secured victory in one hour and 27 minutes and will oppose the winner of the encounter between Argentine qualifier Mateo Nicolas Martinez and Carlos Gomez-Herrera of Spain.
The field is led by World No. 185 Juan Pablo Ficovich of Argentina, who will start his title bid against local qualifier Tomas Farjat. Argentine Francisco Comesana, ranked World No. 290, is the second seed. He will begin his home campaign against Japanese qualifier Naoki Nakagawa.
