Wimbledon
No tennis list would be complete without Wimbledon. Wimbledon is considered to be the most prestigious tennis tournament in the history of tennis and with good reason. It dates back to the year 1877 when for the first time in history, tennis was played on a grass lawn at the All England Club near London. Unlike many other tournaments, Wimbledon has kept true to its tradition and is still played on a grass tennis court.
Apart from tennis, Wimbledon is also known as the tennis tournament where many movie stars and other famous individuals attend the tournament, including of course the English Royal family and ambassadors from many countries.
This is just further proof of how prestigious this tennis tournament is. Wimbledon is also one of the four most important tennis tournaments in the year, also known as the Grand Slam. If you’re a tennis fan, Wimbledon is a must-watch. Fun fact: this is the first time Roger Federer will not play at Wimbledon in over 20 years.
US Open Tennis Tournament
The most important tennis tournament in the United States of America is the US Open. US Open was played in 1881 for the first time in history and back then it was known as the US Championship. Just like its host city, New York, the US Open is lively and exciting and has a more laid-back tone than the other tennis tournaments held around the world. It’s played in the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows and it’s so popular, that it gathered over 600,000 visitors to watch the tennis event in person.
Just the number of tennis fans alone who went to New York to be near the tennis event is astounding, and a witness to the popularity of the US Open. It’s also one of the four Grand Slams.
With no currently US Top-five tennis player, the US open is always an opportunity for new talent to pop up.
BNP Paribas Open
Even though it’s not part of the four major tennis tournaments, BNP Paribas Open draws in around 400,000 visitors which is a huge amount of people by any measure. One of the biggest advantages of the BNP Paribas Open, and the reason it has so many attendees, apart from the tennis, is its location. BNP Paribas is held in Indian Wells, which is situated in the Palm Springs-area of California. A beautiful tourist destination and one of the most famous tennis tournaments in the world make for a perfect combination, that almost every tennis fan wants to visit at some point in their life.
Roland-Garros
Even though this tennis tournament is held at the beginning of June and has already passed this year, it deserves a mention. It’s one of the four Grand Slams and is held in Paris, France. A wonderful destination and a tournament where the most famous tennis superstars gather to face off this tournament is a must-watch.
These are just some of the most important tennis tournaments to follow this summer. Even though tennis is a sport that’s played year-long, summer is the best season to follow the sport.
