Pol Martin Tiffon headlined Wednesday’s second-round action at the Salzburg Open by knocking out No. 3 seed Jiri Lehecka from the Czech Republic. The 22-year-old lucky loser from Spain capitalized on three of his five break-point chances and won 54 per cent of the total points played to secure a 6-4, 6-4 victory in one hour and 20 minutes.
Barcelona native Martin Tiffon, a winner of four singles titles on the ITF World Tennis Tour and currently sitting on a career high World No. 289, will play Slovakia’s Norbert Gombos in his third quarterfinal on the ATP Challenger Tour. The 31-year-old from Galanta fought past Italian youngster Giulio Zeppieri 7-5, 7-6(0) in one hour and 41 minutes.
In the bottom half of the draw, Serbian Dusan Lajovic defeated Dennis Novak from Austria 6-4, 6-4. The World No. 64 and second seed of the €134,920 ATP Challenger Tour clay-court tournament saved the only break point he faced and broke his rival two times to prevail after one hour and 25 minutes. Up next for Lajovic will be sixth-seeded Brazilian Thiago Monteiro of Brazil, who edged out Alex Shevchenko from Russia 6-4, 7-6(4). The encounter lasted one hour and 38 minutes.
