The Citi Open, Washington, D.C.’s combined ATP 500/WTA 250 tournament has released its preliminary player fields for this year’s event. The quality and volume of tennis stars coming to the nation’s capital city this summer keeps getting bigger and better.
After already announcing 2021 US Open women’s champion Emma Raducanu, 2019 Citi Open titlists Nick Kyrgios and Jessica Pegula and 2019 Wimbledon champion Simona Halep to the list of commitments in recent weeks, three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray of Great Britain was among a long list of new players added to the men’s and women’s fields on Wednesday.

Other new names announced include: World No. 10 Hubert Hurkacz of Poland, World No. 16 Denis Shapovalov of Canada and 2021 NextGen ATP Finals runner-up Sebastian Korda of the United States, ranked 46th.
This year’s Citi Open competition, which will take place from July 30 through August 7 at Rock Creek Park Tennis Center in northwest Washington, now includes three former World No. 1 players (Murray, Halep and Victoria Azarenka) as well as six Grand Slam champions, four former Citi Open titlists, three Olympic gold medalists and 10 Top 20 players. The tournament is the first major hard-court event in the run-up to the US Open in New York.

“We are thrilled to share the terrific field of top men’s and women’s players we have lined up for the 2022 Citi Open,” Citi Open Chairman Mark Ein said in a statement. “The draws will be filled by Grand Slam champions, former World No. 1s, past Citi Open winners, Top 20 players and a few new and exciting faces making their tournament debuts.
“In less than a month, our fans will get the opportunity to watch these incredible, world-class athletes, who they follow around the globe, compete right here in the nation’s capital. It’s going to be another memorable week of tennis in Washington.”
The Citi Open, which dates back to its founding in 1969, is one of just five combined ATP/WTA tournaments in the United States. The Citi Open’s ATP 500 event will showcase a field of 48 singles players and 16 doubles teams. The WTA 250 tournament, which returns after a three-year absence, will feature 32 singles competitors and 16 doubles teams.

Citi Open noteworthy
Among the new players added to the Citi Open men’s and women’s fields Wednesday:
• Andy Murray of Great Britain, three-time Grand Slam champion and former World No. 1.
• Hubert Hurkacz of Poland, current World No. 10 and recent winner of his fifth ATP Tour title in Halle.
• Three Top-30 players: World No. 16 Denis Shapovalov of Canada, World No. 22 Karen Khachanov of Russia, and World No. 29 Holger Rune of Denmark.
• A trio of American men: World No. 34 Jenson Brooksby, who was a 2021 Citi Open semifinalist; World No. 46 Sebastian Korda and World No. 55 Mackenzie McDonald, who reached the 2021 Citi Open title match.
•Women’s World No. 44 Ajla Tomljanovic of Croatia, who advanced to this year’s Wimbledon quarterfinals.
• Women’s World No. 1 doubles player Elise Mertens of Belgium, who is part of the top-seeded team at the Wimbledon Championships.
• Other notable additions include: Maxime Cressy of the United States, David Goffin of Belgium, Tommy Paul of the United States, Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic, Donna Vekic of Croatia and Andrea Petkovic of Germany.
