LONDON, April 4, 2016
Milos Raonic and Nick Kyrgios will join Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal and Stan Wawrinka at The Queen’s Club after committing to compete for the Aegon Championships title, 13th-19th June.
Raonic is currently second in the Emirates ATP Race to London standings for 2016, making him the second best player in the world so far this year. He underlined his form by reaching the semifinals of the Australian Open (leading Murray by two sets to one) and the final in Indian Wells two weeks ago. He believes his best is yet to come.
“I believe I can do better than I’ve ever done before on grass,” said the 2014 Wimbledon semifinalist. “I’m really looking forward to coming back to The Queen’s Club for the Aegon Championships. The atmosphere and organisation of the tournament is impressive and the courts are perfect. Grass is a surface where I have had some of my best results and I believe I can make an impact at Queen’s and Wimbledon this year.”
This year, the Canadian began working with former World No.1 Carlos Moya, who was hugely impressed with what he saw.
“Milos is much, much more talented than people think, and he is more talented than I thought. He can do whatever you ask him to do, and we want him to go to the net a lot,” Moya said of the man who stands 6’5”.
Kyrgios, 20 years old from Canberra, entered the Top 20 in the rankings for the first time in his career today. He won his first title in Marseille recently and overcame Raonic to make his first Masters 1000 semifinal in Miami. His big breakthrough came on grass when he beat Nadal at Wimbledon two years ago.
“Grass is my favourite surface,” said Kyrgios. “I’ve had my best results on it, my expectations are high and I’m expecting some good results from myself at Queen’s this year. The conditions are perfect, great preparation for Wimbledon, and all the Australians have played well there over the years. I’m pumped to be coming back.”
Stephen Farrow, Tournament Director of the Aegon Championships, said:
“Milos and Nick are exciting additions to our player field. Milos is the second best player in the world so far this year, reaching the business end of every tournament he has entered, and Nick is one of the most spectacular and talented young players on the planet. We are very much looking forward to seeing them on the grass courts of The Queen’s Club in June.”
Tara McGregor-Woodhams, Head of Brand and Sponsorship Aegon UK, commented :”Milos and Nick are two of the most exciting players in the men’s game and we are delighted at the prospect of seeing them in action at the Aegon Championships in June.”
