The ATP Challenger Tour has returned to Southern Spain for the LIX Copa Sevilla played on traditional Andalusian yellow clay, called ‘albero’, at the Real Club De Tenis Betis. The tournament offers a total prize money of €67,960.

Main draw action kicked off Monday with local wild card entry Javier Barranco Cosano headlining the action. The World No. 408 rallied from a set down to upset eighth-seeded Argentine Marco Trungelliti 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Barranco Cosano, who captured his 12th career title on the ITF World Tennis Tour last week on home soil in Oviedo, withstood seven aces and broke his rival’s serve five times to seal victory in two hours and nine minutes.
The 23-year-old from Javea will next take on Timofey Skatov of Kazakhstan, who beat Italy’s Raul Brancaccio 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 37 minutes.
In other action, Nikolas Sanchez Izquierdo also overcame a one-set deficit to edge out Italian Gian Marco Moroni 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. The World No. 257 from Spain won 54 per cent of the total points played to succeed in two hours and 48 minutes. Up next for Sanchez Izquierdo will be the winner of the encounter between US-American qualifier Nicolas Moreno de Alboran and No. 6 seed Federico Delbonis of Argentina.
Top seed and defending champion Pedro Martinez of Spain will open his home campaign on Tuesday taking on in-form Belgian Kimmer Coppejans, winner of the Internationeaux Tennis de Toulouse ATP Challenger last Sunday.
Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles, ranked World No. 79, leads the bottom half of the draw and will start his title bid against Nino Serdarusic of Croatia.
