The year-end South American swing on the ATP Challenger Tour is kicking off this week in Argentina with the inaugural Challenger Dove Men+Care Villa Maria. The $53,120 clay-court event is being held at the Sport Social Club in Villa Maria, a city in Córdoba Province, located in the center of rich agricultural land.
Six qualifiers completed the main draw on Monday. Orlando Luz emerged victorious from the all-Brazilian affair with Joao Lucas Reis da Silva, winning 6-3, 6-3. Luz plays No. 3 seed Facundo Bagnis of Argentina in the opening round.
In other action, Alejo Lorenzo Lingua defeated his compatriot Tomas Farjat of Argentina 6-4, 6-1 to set a first-round clash with the tournament’s No. 2 seed Camilo Ugo Carabelli from Argentina. Home favourites Matias Franco Descotte, Ignacio Monzon and Franco Emanuel Egea round out the qualifiers.
The top seed in Villa Maria is World No. 102 Juan Pablo Varillas. The 26-year-old Peruvian is bidding for his fifth ATP Challenger Tour career crown, his first of the season. Varillas will begin his title against his compatriot Nicolas Alvarez. Sunday’s crowned champion will earn 80 ATP Ranking points.
