Four Argentines have booked their spots in the quarterfinals of the $53,120 Challenger de Buenos Aires. Juan Manuel Cerundolo defeated his compatriot and qualifier Hernan Casanova 6-2, 6-2 on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old Buenos Aires native, who captured his maiden ATP Tour title on home soil at the Cordoba Open last year, capitalized on five of his six break-point chances to advance in one hour and six minutes.

Cerundolo will next take on No. 5 seed Facundo Bagnis, who remained untroubled during his 6-1, 6-4 win over Juan Bautista Torres of Argentina.

“Against Facu it will be a very tough match, but I will do my best,” said Cerundolo of his upcoming match.

“I feel very good, the main thing is to be healthy and spending some time on the court,” added the 20-year-old, who recovered from a hip injury. “At the beginning of the year I started to work on new things. In 2021, I played more defensively, but it’s my natural game and it’s something that can’t be taken out automatically.”

In other action, fourth favourite Camilo Ugo Carabelli edged past local wild card entry Juan Bautista Otegui 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 in two hours and 10 minutes. The World No. 113 will next take on Renzo Olivo, who received a walkover from Yannick Hanfmann. The eighth-seeded German was forced to withdraw from the match with a right elbow injury.
