Yevseyev Upsets Novak In Wolffkran Open First Round

The ATP Challenger Tour has returned to Germany for a two-week indoor swing in Ismaning and Hamburg. First stop is the sixth edition of the Wolffkran Open by Tannenhof. The €45,730 indoor tournament, the only ATP Challenger Tour event held on carpet, is taking place this week at the Tennis Club Ismaning, located about seven kilometers northeast of Munich on the right high bank of the Isar River.

Main draw action got underway Monday headlined by Denis Yevseyev. The World No. 278 from Kazakhstan knocked out fourth-seeded Austrian Dennis Novak 7-6(5), 7-6(4). In a match with two service breaks on each side, Yevseyev outpointed his rival 84-77 after one hour and 31 minutes.

The 29-year-old Almaty native, a winner of eight singles titles on the ITF Pro Circuit, will next take on either Benjamin Hassan from Lebanon or Chinese qualifier Bu Yunchaokete.

In other first-round action, Alastair Gray of Great Britain defeated Filip Horansky of Slovakia 6-3, 6-4 and awaits the winner of the encounter between German qualifier Julian Lenz and No. 7 seed Nerman Fatic of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Later in the evening, home favourite and No. 5 seed Daniel Masur booked his spot in the second round with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Evgeny Karlovskiy of Russia. The 27-year-old German withstood 15 aces and broke his rival two times to prevail after one hour and 14 minutes. Masur will next play either his compatriot Mats Moraing or Ukrainian alternate Vitaliy Sachko.
