The South American clay-court swing on the ATP Challenger Tour continues this week in Peru with the Lima 2 Challenger hosted by the Tennis Club Las Terrazas Miraflores.
Top seed Federico Coria opened his title bid with a 6-3, 6-3 first-round win over Dutch qualifier Max Houkes on Tuesday. The World No. 73 from Argentina, a four-time champion on the Challenger Circuit, broke his rival’s serve five times and won 55 per cent of the total points played to advance in one hour and 34 minutes.
Up next for Coria will be 18-year-old local wild card entry Ignacio Buse, who upset Brazilian Daniel Dutra da Silva 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 on Monday.
In the bottom half of the draw, Tomas Martin Etcheverry of Argentina beat Jan Choinski of Great Britain 6-4, 6-2. The No. 2 seed of the $53,120 event sent down six aces and won 84 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after one hour and 46 minutes.
Etcheverry will next play his compatriot and qualifier Genaro Alberto Olivieri, a 6-1, 7-6(1) winner over Thiago Seyboth Wild of Brazil. Third-seeded Italian Marco Cecchinato and No. 4 seed Daniel Altmaier have also booked their spots in the second round.
