Heide Cruises Past Borg To Advance At Sao Leo Open

SAO LEOPOLDO/STARNBERG, November 17, 2022

Brazilian wild card entry Gustavo Heide emerged victorious from the battle of the youngsters with 19-year-old Swedish qualifier Leo Borg in the first round of the Challenger Dove Men & Care Sao Leo Open. The 20-year-old Sao Paolo native prevailed 6-1, 6-2 on Thursday.

Heide was in control of the encounter, sent down four aces and won 77 per cent of his first-service points to succeed in exactly one hour of play. The World No. 406, a winner of five singles titles on the ITF World Tennis Tour, will next challenge Facundo Bagnis of Argentina, top seed of the $53,120 ATP Challenger Tour clay-court event.

Elsewhere, Juan Pablo Varillas opened his campaign in São Leopoldo with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 first-round win over Brazilian lucky loser Eduardo Ribeiro. The No. 2 seed broke his rival’s serve five times to advance in two hours and four minutes. Up next for Varillas will be Gonzalo Lama of Chile. The 29-year-old from Santiago beat Swiss qualifier Damien Wenger 6-2, 7-6(5) in two hours and 16 minutes.

Other winners on Wednesday include Joao Domingues of Portugal, Nick Hardt from the Dominican Republic, Brazilian alternate Joao Lucas Reis da Silva, Nicolas Alvarez of Peru and Brazilian qualifier Mateus Alves.
