ITF Press Release, November 17, 2022
The International Tennis Federation has announced the 2022 year-end Billie Jean King Cup Nations Rankings, which include the results of the 2022 Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge Finals. Runners-up Australia retain the top ranking, while this year’s world champions Switzerland rise to No. 2, their highest position since the rankings were introduced in 2002.
The Swiss team, spearheaded by Olympic gold medallist Belinda Bencic, won their first title at the women’s World Cup of Tennis on Sunday, after defeating Australia 2-0. The victory completes a strong two-year period for Switzerland, after the team’s runners-up finish in 2021. Prior to the 2020 Qualifiers, the Swiss team had won just one of their previous five ties.
While Australia’s wait for a first Billie Jean King Cup title since 1974 continues, Alicia Molik’s team have impressed in recent seasons, with two runners-up finishes (in 2019 and 2022) and one semi-final appearance (in 2021).
Australia, ranked No. 1 since November 2021, are one of just six nations to have held the No. 1 ranking since the rankings were introduced in November 2002 – alongside Czech Republic, France, Italy, Russia and Slovakia.
The Billie Jean King Cup Nations Rankings are published following each competition week and reflect the performance of teams over the previous four seasons, with recent results weighted more heavily. The current rankings cover a five-year period due to the 2020 and 2021 seasons being combined as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
