LAVER CUP Press Release, April 20, 2023

World No.5 Stefanos Tsitsipas and World No.6 Andrey Rublev will join forces on Bjorn Borg’s Team Europe at the upcoming Laver Cup, to be held at Rogers Arena in Vancouver from September 22-24.

Tsitsipas will make his fourth Laver Cup appearance and Rublev his second on the six-man team. “I am really excited to have Stefanos and Andrey as members of our team this year,” Borg said.  “They are both incredible young players at the top of their game with a great track record in Laver Cup competition. Stefanos has been part of the team since Geneva in 2019 and Rublev was part of the winning team in Boston in 2021. I know they, like me, will be super motivated to win the Laver Cup back for Team Europe.” Tsitsipas is the highest-ranked Greek male tennis player in history and the first from his country to reach the final of a major in singles, which he did at the 2021 French Open and again earlier this year at the Australian Open. The former world No.1 junior has nine ATP titles to his name and is one of the sport’s most entertaining stars. The 24-year-old holds a 3-1 win-loss singles record in Laver Cup with his only loss coming in the final match of last year’s unforgettable Laver Cup in London. Tsitsipas led by a set and held four match points in the second set tiebreak, before Team World’s Frances Tiafoe turned things around to win the electrifying clash 1-6 7-6 (11) 10-8 giving Team World a coveted maiden title.  I have great memories of playing Laver Cup and being part of the team, but last year was tough,” Tsitsipas said. “I played with my heart and gave it my best, but unfortunately it didn’t go the way we wanted.” “Still, we move on, and we have a pretty good track record in Laver Cup so I’m optimistic for this year. I will do everything I can to help Team Europe win the title back in Vancouver.” Rublev, a former World No.1 junior, broke into the top 20 in January 2020, top 10 in October 2020 and top 5 in September 2021. Last week he won his first ATP Masters 1000 title in Monte Carlo and currently sits at No.6 in the rankings with a total of 13 ATP titles to his name. The 25-year-old made his Laver Cup debut in Boston in 2021 and is unbeaten in Laver Cup competition boasting a 3-0 record.  “I can’t wait to compete in the Laver Cup once again,” Rublev said. “Being part of the winning team in Boston is a memory that will stay with me forever.” Named in honor of Australian tennis legend Rod Laver, winner of the calendar-year Grand Slam in 1962 and 1969, the Laver Cup pits six of the top men’s tennis players from Europe against six of their counterparts from the rest of the world. The competition rotates host cities between Europe and the World annually. Top ranked Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime and Americans Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe have been named on McEnroe’s Team World as the event comes to Canada and the Northwest for the first time. The top three-ranked players for each team earn a guaranteed invitation based on their ATP singles ranking on the Monday after Wimbledon (July 17, 2023). If a top three-ranked player chooses not to participate, the offer will be made to another high ranked player. The remaining three will be Captains’ picks and named any time before the start of the US Open. With the naming of Tsitsipas and Rublev before the qualification deadline, Borg is committing to use one or more of his captain’s picks if needed to guarantee their participation. Single-session tickets to the event, that has sold out arenas around the world, go on sale on Friday, April 28 at 10:00AM PDT via Ticketmaster. Single-session tickets will be available for each of the five sessions, with prices starting at CAD$35 for Friday’s day session and CAD$50 for all other sessions (excluding tax & fees). Multi-session ticket packages, providing the same seat for all five sessions, are currently on sale via Ticketmaster.  Fans are encouraged to register at lavercup.com for the latest ticket information and to access single-session ticket pre-sales.
