Serbian teenager Hamad Medjedovic has captured the title of the second edition of the Danube Upper Austrian Open powered by SKE. In a rain-interrupted singles final on Sunday, which lasted almost six hours, the 19-year-old fought past home favourite Filip Misolic, No. 5 seed of the €118,000 ATP Challenger Tour clay-court event in Mauthausen, 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-4.

The encounter was suspended after the very first game and in the final game of the third set when Medjedovic was serving for the match. Overall, it was a tough day for the organizers, who tried their best to cover the court during each interruption, the numerous spectators looking for shelter, as well as for the players. In drizzling conditions, Medjedovic fired 18 aces and won 75 per cent of his first-service points to seal victory in two hours and 32 minutes.
“I can’t even describe the feeling, it’s just incredible,” said Medjedovic, who knocked out top seed Dominic Thiem in the semi-finals. “The win against Dominic yesterday was already a big highlight, but to win the title today means everything to me. It was a long way with the two rain interruptions. At 5-2, I didn’t know how to finish successfully. The conditions were not easy for me, as it was slippery. Filip fought back once more and made life difficult for me with five break points – but I could rely on my serve and my forehand. I’m overjoyed that it still worked out.”
By winning his third career title on the ATP Challenger Tour, his second of the season following his triumph in Szekesfehervar, Hungary in March, the World No. 214 pocketed €16,020 in prize money as well as 100 ATP Ranking points.
