HEILBRONN, May 30, 2023
Dominic Thiem will come to Heilbronn to compete in the 2023 NECKARCUP. The 29-year-old Austrian, who fell in the opening round of the French Open at Roland Garros, has received a wild card for next week’s award-winning ATP Challenger Tour event in southwestern Germany.
Thiem lost to Pedro Cachin of Argentina in five hard-fought sets in Paris on Monday afternoon. “I didn’t start well at all. How should I say, I was very tight. What I was expecting I had very, very good practice sets, but most of the times in the first real match it’s not that easy, and that’s what happened,” the World No. 92 said after his third consecutive first-round loss at Roland Garros.
Thiem might have lost in Paris, but the two-time Roland Garros finalist is eager to continue his return to form in Heilbronn.
“The last six weeks were really good. But, yeah, obviously it’s not enough yet to play well, to play well in a tournament like that. But, yeah, again, I feel that I’m on the right track again. Today I just failed to reward myself,” said Thiem, who has captured two titles on the Challenger Tour. The Wiener Neustadt native lifted the trophies on Moroccan soil in Kenitra and Casablanca in 2013. Thiem earned his last title at the 2020 US Open, his biggest triumph of his career so far.
The NECKARCUP offers a prize money of €145,000 and will be held on clay from June 4 to 11 at the TC Heilbronn Trappensee E.V. 1892, one of the few remaining clubs on the ATP Challenger Tour to be founded in the 1800s.
