Tsitsipas Thrilled To Play European Open In Antwerp

While the European Open in Antwerp, an ATP Tour 250-level indoor hardcourt event, annually attracts big-name players – its headline attractions and past champions have included Andy MurrayJannik Sinner and Felix Auger-Aliassime – this year it has attracted its first Top-5 talent: Stefanos Tsitsipas.

On Thursday, the European Open revealed it had received a commitment from the current World No. 5 from Greece, who was a recent quarterfinalist at the French Open. The 24-year-old Greek has been a finalist twice this season, at the Australian Open and Barcelona, as well as a semifinalist at the United Cup and Rome. A nine-time titlist on the ATP Tour — including two Monte-Carlo crowns – Tsitsipas has amassed a 29-9 win-loss record this season.

“Stefanos Tsitsipas, still only 24-years-old, has already made impressive achievements on the professional tennis circuit,” said European Open tournament director Dick Norman in a press release. “With his talent and determination, Tsitsipas has established himself as a fierce contender for the top names in tennis. As No. 5 in the world rankings, the European Open really has a top-class tennis player.”

According to Norman, Tsitsipas will make his first appearance in this year’s tournament at Lotto Arena on Thursday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale through the tournament’s website.
