TODI/STARNBERG, August 19, 2023
Luciano Darderi and Clement Tabur will compete in Saturday’s singles final of the Internazionali Città di Todi | Sidernestor Tennis Cup. Darderi emerged victorious from the all-Italian affair with Francesco Maestrelli, winning 7-6(7), 6-4 on Friday.
The No. 7 seed of the €73,000 ATP Challenger Tour clay-court tournament in Todi saved all four break points he faced and converted one of his own six break-point chances to succeed after two hours and 19 minutes.
“I was expecting a match like this because Francesco has achieved great results and is an excellent tennis player. The first set lasted almost an hour and a half, there were many unconverted break points, and then in the tie-break, I managed to save two set points, perhaps with a bit of luck,” said Darderi.
Tabur fought past Giovanni Fonio of Italy 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. The 23-year-old Frenchman won one point less than his opponent but secured victory in two hours and 29 minutes.
“I’m really exhausted. How did I recover? I don’t know, but some friends came here and gave me the boost. I think it’s thanks to them,” said Tabur, who reached his first title match at ATP Challenger level.
Tabur and Darderi will meet for the first time. “It will be a great final. Against Luciano, I’m expecting an intense match, so I need to rest well,” the World No. 334 added.
