MESTRE, May 23, 2016
Gastao Elias is the champion of the €42,500 XIV Venice Challenger Save Cup in Mestre. The world number 88 claimed his sixth ATP Challenger crown with a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Horacio Zeballos in Sunday’s final.
Elias won 71% of his first service point and converted three of his five break point chances to finish the encounter after one hour and 28 minutes.
“I want to thank my coach an my girl friend Isabella. I played really well this week but also credit to my opponent. Horacio is one of the great players on the tour,” Elias said taking away €6,150 in prize money as well as 80 ATP ranking points. He has become the 10th player to win multiple ATP Challenger titles in 2016, following his triumph in Turin earlier the season.
“It’s a pity that I lost today,” said Zeballos. “I wanted to win another title here after I clinched the doubles trophy with with Pablo Cuevas two years ago. But I will return to Mestre having another try.”
On Saturday, Fabricio Neis and Caio Zampieri took the doubles title, winning 7-6, 4-6, 12-10 against Kevin Krawietz and Dino Marcan. The final lasted one hour and 33 minutes.
