Jurij Rodionov of Austria headlined Wednesday’s second-round action at the III Open Comunidad de Madrid. The No. 6 seed of the ATP Challenger Tour 100 clay-court event defeated Bernabe Zapata Miralles of Spain 6-4, 6-2.
Rodionov, who seeking at the Club De Campo Villa De Madrid his second Challenger triumph of the season following his title win at the Koblenz Open in Germany, fired nine aces and won 86 per cent of his first-service points to advance in one hour and two minutes.
“I am very happy with my performance today. I managed to play very consistently and with strength,” said Rodionov. “I am very happy to reach my second quarterfinals of the season. Hopefully, I can continue playing like this. These are very tough matches because all the players are very good. I like the altitude of Madrid because it complements my game.”
Up next for Rodionov will be Benjamin Hassan. The 29-year-old German rallied past Giulio Zeppieri of Italy 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in one hour and 32 minutes.
In other action, Swiss qualifier Marc-Andrea Huesler also punched his ticket for the quarterfinals. The World No. 232 battled past fourth-seeded Chinese Juncheng Shang 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. Huesler capitalized on three of his seven break-point chances to prevail after two hours and 17 minutes.
Husler will next play Italian Stefano Napolitano, a 7-6(7), 7-5 winner over Vit Kopriva from the Czech Republic. The encounter lasted two hours and 14 minutes.
