The Mallorca Championships presented by waterdrop in Santa Ponça will likely be one of the last opportunities to see Dominic Thiem play on grass. It was at this very venue in 2021 when Thiem suffered the wrist injury in his right hitting arm during his round-of-16 match against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, an injury that the Austrian recently cited as one of the reasons for his decision to end his career after this season.
“I am really looking forward to playing in Mallorca one more time. When I step onto the court there, I won’t be thinking about the injury; instead, I’ll focus on the many positive things I associate with Mallorca. I love the island, and the Mallorca Country Club offers a perfect setting for the tournament. I hope to see a lot of Austrian fans who are vacationing in Mallorca during the tournament week,” Thiem explained.
Thiem has celebrated one of his 17 ATP Tour titles on grass. In 2016, he won at the Weissenhof in Stuttgart, defeating German local hero Philipp Kohlschreiber in the final, after previously overcoming eight-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer in a thrilling three-set semifinal.
“We are very pleased that Dominic Thiem is returning to the Mallorca Championships this year. With his US Open triumph, 17 ATP Tour titles, and many unforgettable moments, he has significantly shaped the tennis scene in recent years,” emphasized tournament organizer Edwin Weindorfer.
Thiem is not the only Austrian set to compete at the €1,005,340 ATP 250 grass-court tournament on the Spanish holiday island at the end of June. Sebastian Ofner, the current World No. 45 and Austria’s top player, will also participate in the Mallorca Championships presented by waterdrop. Additionally, veterans Gael Monfils of France and Italian Fabio Fognini, two of the most entertaining players on the ATP Tour, have entered the field for the final tournament before the Championships at Wimbledon.
The line-up is led by US-American Ben Shelton (ATP No. 15), followed by Frenchmen Ugo Humbert (ATP No. 16), Adrian Mannarino (ATP No. 22) of France and Chilean Alejandro Tabilo (ATP No. 24). Also participating is the rising Czech player Tomas Machac. The defending champion is US-American Christopher Eubanks. Spaniards Pedro Martinez, Roberto Carballes Baena and Jaume Munar represent the home favourites.
