World No. 1 Jannik Sinner faces a challenging start at the 31st TERRA WORTMANN OPEN. The Italian top seed will play against Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor in the opening round of the ATP 500 grass-court event. This marks Sinner’s debut as the World No. 1 in Halle, Westphalia. World No. 4 Alexander Zverev is set to play a qualifier in his first round. Sinner and Zverev, the tournament’s top two seeds, are also considered strong favorites for the coveted trophy.

The top two seeds are indeed clear contenders for the title,” said tournament director Ralf Weber.

Sinner, 22, the rising star from South Tyrol, has been preparing since Thursday for the competition in Halle, which features five Top Ten players. His opponent Griekspoor recently squandered a 4-1 lead with a double break in the fifth and decisive set of his third-round French Open match against Zverev. This week, the 27-year-old Griekspoor lost his semifinal match in ‘s-Hertogenbosch to US-American Sebastian Korda. Sinner took a break after his semifinal exit in Paris against eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz, similar to Roland Garros finalist Zverev. The German also arrived four days before the start of the main draw matches in Halle.

Local favorite Jan-Lennard Struff will face Italian Luciano Darderi in his opening match. If the Warstein native wins, he could meet Stefanos Tsitsipas or Duisburg wild card entrant Henri Squire  in the round of 16. Squire, like his German colleague Dominik Koepfer (ATP 65), participated in the draw ceremony. The Black Forest native Koepfer, who also received a wild card into the main draw, was drawn against Canadian No. 8 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime.

World No. 5 Daniil Medvedev will play Portugal’s Nuno Borges in the first round, while sixth-seed Andrey Rublev will face Marcos Giron from the United States.

Tournament director Weber also announced that 2021 Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini has entered the main draw via the “Special Exempt” rule, replacing the injured Kei Nishikori of Japan. Berrettini is currently in the semi-finals of the BOSS Open in Stuttgart.
