Cranbrook Tennis Classic Underway At Bloomfield Hills

BLOOMFIELD HILLS/STARNBERG, July 3, 2024

The ATP Challenger Tour is back in the United States to kick off the crucial phase of the American hard-court swing. The second edition of the Cranbrook Tennis Classic is being held this week at the Cranbrook Tennis Complex in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

The field is led by World No. 115 JJ Wolf. The top seed of the $82,000 event opened his title bid on Monday with a solid 6-4, 7-5 first-round win over fellow US-American and wild card entry Andres Martin. Wolf, who is seeking his sixth ATP Challenger Tour career title, his first since 2021, will next play Yuta Shimizu of Japan.

In the bottom half of the draw, Philip Sekulic knocked out No. 2 seed Emilio Nava from the United States 6-0, 2-6, 7-5. The 20-year-old Australian will next take on home favourite Ethan Quinn.

Other seeded players, who advanced to the second round include Gijs Brouwer of the Netherlands and Yunchaokete Bu from China. Brouwer eased past US-American qualifier Christian Langmo 6-1, 6-4 and Bu defeated Briton Ryan Peniston 6-4, 6-4. In other action, former World No. 17 Bernard Tomic earned a hard-fought 6-7(1), 6-3, 6-4 victory over Nicolas Mejia of Colombia. The 31-year-old Australian will oppose local qualifier Quinn Vandecasteele in his upcoming match.
