Seven second-round matches of the BRAWO OPEN took place on Wednesday in mostly sunny weather with temperatures of about 25 degrees Celsius. The ATP Challenger 125 Tour clay-court tournament in Braunschweig is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.
World No. 311 Nicola Kuhn of Germany, who upset third seed Thiago Seyboth Wild from Brazil the previous day, faced Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert in a thrilling match on the BRAWO Center Court. Herbert, the 2023 BRAWO OPEN doubles champion, also displayed strong performance in singles, defeating Kuhn, the 2017 Braunschweig winner, 6-1, 7-5 in just an hour. The 33-year-old, a father of two, stated after the match, “I want to show more in singles over the next few years and hope to go far here.”

Henri Squire, who overcame fellow German Daniel Masur in a three-set marathon that lasted nearly three hours the day before, also advanced to the quarterfinals. Squire faced 20-year-old Max Rehberg, who knocked off No. 4 seed Daniel Altmaier in the opening round. Squire won 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 in a match characterized by gripping baseline rallies and long exchanges. Despite his win, the 1.96-meter tall player remarked self-critically, “I haven’t shown my best tennis yet.”
In other action, top seed Roberto Carballes Baena continued his dominant run. The World No. 64 from Spain defeated Lukas Klein of Slovakia 6-2, 6-4 in the afternoon and will next take on eighth-seeded Chilean Cristian Garin.
