FARO/STARNBERG, October 20, 2024
Polish teenager Monika Stankiewicz emerged victorious at the Faro Ladies Open, claiming her first professional title. The 13th edition of the ITF World Tennis Tour W35 event took place from October 13 to 20 at the Faro Tennis and Padel Center, supported by the Faro Municipality and the Portuguese Tennis Federation.
Ranked World No. 972, Stankiewicz, still only 17 and currently ranked 20th in the ITF Junior Rankings, showed poise in her debut final on the Pro Circuit. She faced World No. 366 Matilde Jorge from Portugal in Sunday’s final and won 7-6(3), 6-3. Stankiewicz’s victory was all the more impressive as she didn’t drop a set throughout the week, starting from the qualifying rounds.

This event marked only the sixth professional tournament for Stankiewicz, who has now transitioned from her junior career. Her opponent, Jorge, despite playing her second singles final, struggled with her serve, failing to capitalize on two opportunities to take the first set. Stankiewicz’s consistent play ultimately wore down the Portuguese player.
After the match, Stankiewicz expressed disbelief at her achievement and acknowledged the challenges she faced competing alone all week. “I stayed in my bubble and managed my energy well,” she said, reflecting on her calm and intelligent approach in crucial moments.
Stankiewiecz’s remarkable run in Faro is expected to push her up nearly 300 spots in the WTA Rankings, moving her comfortably within the top 700.
