HAMBURG/STARNBERG, October 30, 2024
Belinda Bencic is back on the tennis tour after her maternity break and has immediately returned to her winning ways. The 2021 Olympic gold medalist and former World No. 4 won her first-round match at the Hamburg Henssler at Home Ladies Cup on Wednesday, defeating defending champion Julia Avdeeva from Russia 6-3, 6-1.
Bencic broke Avdeeva’s serve right in the first game but was briefly broken back to 3-3. From there, she went on an eight-game winning streak, securing a dominant victory in one hour and 11 minutes.
“I played solidly and am happy with myself,” said the 27-year-old Swiss. “I still need to be quicker and more explosive, but I’m not putting pressure on myself,” Bencic added, acknowledging her steady progress.
Up next at the ITF World Tennis Tour W75 tournament in Hamburg-Horn will be Anastasia Kulikova of Finland.
