Jiri Lehecka claimed his second ATP Tour career title on Sunday at the Brisbane International presented by Evie, after Reilly Opelka from the United States was forced to retire early in the first set of the singles singles due to a back injury.

Lehecka was leading 4-1 when Opelka, hindered by physical issues, was unable to continue after only 13 minutes. Opelka had impressively defeated Novak Djokovic to reach his first tour-level final since 2022, but the toll of his demanding run proved too much in his first head-to-head clash with the 23-year-old Czech.

“It is never easy to finish a match this way, I know how you feel Reilly,” said Lehecka, who beat beat Holger Rune, Yoshihito Nishioka, Nicolas Jarry and Grigor Dimitrov en route to the championship match. “It has been an honour to see you back playing and if your body can take it you will be there for many more years.

“It was a great week for me in Brisbane. I just love to play here in Australia. I want to thank everyone for coming to watch and my team.”

Lehecka earned $96,985 in prize money as well as 250 ATP Ranking points. The Brisbane International presented by Evie was hosted by the Queensland Tennis Centre.
