OBERHACHING, February 12, 2025
The TennisBase Open in Oberhaching continued on Wednesday with the remaining first-round matches of the ITF World Tennis Tour M15 event.
After Tom Sickenberger’s withdrawal due to illness, Cedrik-Marcel Stebe had to quickly adjust his preparation for a new opponent, facing lucky loser Edison Ambarzumjan (ATP No. 1180).
The 34-year-old left-hander aimed to control the match with long rallies, while Ambarzumjan looked to shorten points with variety. The first set reached a thrilling tie-break, highlighted by a spectacular tweener passing shot from Ambarzumjan. However, Stebe dominated the breaker, winning 7-2.
The second set featured more intense rallies, but Stebe raised his level, while Ambarzumjan, fatigued from qualifying matches, struggled physically. At 5-4, Stebe broke serve and closed the match emphatically with an ace, securing a 7-6(3), 6-4 victory after nearly two hours.
It marked Stebe’s first win in only his second tournament since returning from a two-year injury break. He will face Adrian Oetzbach (ATP No. 664) in an all-German second-round clash.
“I felt much more comfortable here on the hard court than on the carpet in Cadolzburg,” Stebe said post-match. “The first match of a tournament is always tough, and my opponent made it difficult for me to find my rhythm. But I managed to pull through.”
Top seed Mats Rosenkranz (ATP No. 366) started his campaign in dominant fashion, defeating Stefano D’Agostino (ATP No. 827) of Italy 6-3, 6-2. The powerful German left-hander broke early in both sets and maintained control throughout.
At 5-1 in the second set, Rosenkranz faced his only two break points but held firm before closing the match with an ace. He will face Philip Hjorth (ATP No. 822) of Denmark in the next round.
“It was a really good match for me today, something I can build on for the rest of the tournament,” said Rosenkranz. “Winning a Challenger title last season gave me huge motivation, and I’m confident I can establish myself at that level.”
