Only one day after he had lost in the stage of the final four at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Dominic Thiem was back on a grass court. The Austrian youngster did the coin toss ahead of the final of the WTA Mallorca Open between Caroline Garcia and Anastasija Sevastova at Santa Ponsa Country Club.

Thim travelled to the Balearic Island in order to take part in the Toni Nadal Trophy, an exhibition tournament held one day after the women’s final.

“I was positively suprised by the venue and the entire island. The club here is very modern and it’s a really nice atmosphere. The grass courts look amazing, although the women played here for the whole week. The courts almost look like in Wimbledon,” Thiem told ahead of his first exhibition match.

“Preparations for Wimbledon are looking good. I have already played seven matches on grass, which is pretty much but every additional hour on the grass is helpful. There are only two or three weeks played on this surface during the year, so every minutes is valuable for me. Consequently, the exhibition suits perfectly. The weather is great and it will be a lot of fun.”

Only one set was played in the first part of the three-man-exhibition, when Thiem defeated Carlos Moya 7-6 but then lost the final to Feliciano López 7-6, 6-1.

On Wednesday, Thiem went on to London and feels well prepared with the tournaments he played ahead of the All England Championships in Stuttgart, Halle as well as the exhibition in Mallorca. The Austrian youngster will face a tough opening round, taking on the winner of the Gerry Weber Open Florian Mayer. The German veteran beat Thiem in Halle en route to the title in the semi-final in straight sets.
