HAMBURG, April 9, 2026
The Bitpanda Hamburg Open will welcome one of the most exciting players on the ATP Tour back to the Rothenbaum this May, as Holger Rune is set to make his long-awaited return at the ATP 500 event in Hamburg.
For the 22-year-old Dane, the tournament marks an important step after a lengthy injury layoff and a strong statement as he resumes his career. Rune, a former World No. 4 who is currently ranked No. 29, has won five ATP Tour titles, including the Barcelona Open in 2025 and the Paris Masters in 2022.
However, Rune’s 2025 season came to an abrupt end in October when he suffered a complete Achilles tendon rupture during the ATP tournament in Stockholm. The injury required surgery and several months of rehabilitation. Since then, Rune has been working intensively on his return to the tour.
Hamburg appears to be a fitting place for his comeback. Rune impressed at the Rothenbaum in 2024, reaching the quarter-finals, and now returns to a venue where he has already enjoyed success.
“The hard work starts in Hamburg. I can’t wait to be back on clay at the Bitpanda Hamburg Open and finally experience the atmosphere again after such a long break,” Rune said.
Tournament director Enric Molina Mur is equally delighted by Rune’s decision to return in Hamburg.
“We are very happy that Holger Rune will make his comeback with us in Hamburg. I know how much work Holger has put into this intense rehabilitation period, and we feel very honoured that he has chosen the Bitpanda Hamburg Open to return to the tour. I am sure that he will once again feel the special atmosphere here at the Rothenbaum – both from the Hamburg crowd and from the many Danish tennis fans who will travel to Hamburg.”
Rune joins a strong field that already includes Germans Jan-Lennard Struff and Justin Engel, as well as World No. 3 Alexander Zverev, who will compete in his home city and target the title.
International opposition will come from defending champion Flavio Cobolli and Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, who, like last year, will also compete in Hamburg.
